Verona, Mantova, Bologna: historical cities, different landscapes, great food
EUROVELO 7 runs from North Cape to Malta. You cycle along it from Verona to Bologna to visit extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage cities (Verona, Mantua, Bologna) and have the opportunity to slowly discover often little-known areas: the countryside of the Po Valley, reshaped by human hands, with its artistic and gastronomic heritage.
Starting from Verona, you will discover the Valpolicella area, then head South towards Mantua. You will then encounter the Po and Secchia rivers, before taking the cycle path on the old disused railway line that will take you safely from Mirandola to Osteria Nuova. You will discover small authentic villages such as Mirandola and San Felice sul Panaro, before reaching Bologna, the city of a thousand porticoes, soaring towers, ancient university and delicious cuisine.

From the still intact remains of the Roman era, including the Arena, to medieval structures such as the Castelvecchio Bridge, which tells the story of Romeo and Juliet, to the grand noble palaces, every street in Verona is sure to charm you. Meet & greet and bike fitting at Itinera.
Overnight in Verona.
Bike fitting and welcome meeting at Itinera. Today you will explore the classic Valpolicella wine-producing area, following country roads through vineyards, ancient rural houses and elegant Venetian villas, some of which are now prestigious wineries. You will then cycle back to Verona along beautiful hills, the classic terraces of Valpolicella and the Adige River.
Overnight in Verona.
Leave Verona heading South-West towards Sommacampagna. Don’t miss a stop at the medieval castle of Valeggio sul Mincio, with its Ghibelline swallowtail battlements, or at Borghetto sul Mincio, the city of tortellini! Cycling along the green Mincio River, today’s destination is Mantua, a charming medieval city surrounded by three lakes.
Overnight stay in Mantua.
From Mantua, you quickly find yourself immersed in the countryside, among canals and cultivated fields, cycling along the Mincio to Governolo, which was once a fortified village with a castle, now destroyed. All that remains are the partially buried hydraulic works, a clock tower and a few houses. In the next section, we ride along the Po, Italy’s longest river, with its large basin, now partly sandy due to widespread drought. Our stop is Ostiglia, a simple, hard-working town founded along the river. To relax, we can take a dip in the hotel swimming pool.
Overnight in Ostiglia.
Crossing the bridge over the Po, we come to the Secchia River and follow its winding course. Driving through the streets of Concordia sulla Secchia, we can still see the damage caused by the 2012 earthquake. We now head towards Mirandola, the birthplace of Italian philosopher Giovanni Pico dei Conti della Mirandola, and then towards our destination for today: San Felice sul Panaro with its beautiful Rocca Estense fortress.
Overnight in San Felice sul Panaro.
The route runs alongside the Brenner-Bologna railway line. You come across San Giovanni in Persiceto, which offers unexpected attractions: the Physics Museum, small squares with beautiful murals, and a very ancient history of Carnival, traces of which can be found throughout the town. Then you head towards Bologna, our grand destination!
Overnight in Bologna.
This circular route is dedicated to exploring the Bologna countryside.
You’ll leave the city following the Navile canal, reaching open fields and country houses. Today, don’t miss the Museum of Rural Life, the Museum of Industrial Heritage and the village of Bentivoglio.
Second overnight in Bologna.
Breakfast, check out and end of services. Arrivederci!
